Bridging the Digital Divide: Developing an E-Government Portal in Nepal

The Visionarys Nepal, Medinee Aryal (Project Coordinator), Aakriti Pant (Design and Prototyping Lead), Anjali Dahal (Finance Department Lead), Ajita K.C.(Research Lead), Khesehang Yonghang (Web Application Developer), first applied for the Youth Action Fund (YAF), we envisioned a digital solution to bridge the gap between Birgunj’s residents and their local government. Many people in Ward No. 12 struggled to access basic e-government services, from tax payments to reporting civic issues. We believed that by creating an intuitive information portal, we could empower the community—especially young people—to engage more effectively with their municipality. Winning the YAF grant was just the beginning; what followed was months of collaboration, problem-solving, and unexpected learning.

One of our biggest challenges was refining our initial idea. We had planned a dual-portal system, but after meeting with the ward officer and local students, we realized that a single, streamlined information portal would be more practical. Conducting surveys and workshops helped us understand the community’s needs, and the data showed just how little awareness there was about e-government tools. Seeing those pre-test scores—where most students scored below 30%—was eye-opening. It pushed us to design a platform that was as simple and accessible as possible.

Launching easykaryalayas.com was a proud moment. The team handled everything from domain registration to content integration, ensuring the site linked directly to essential services. The real test came during our workshop at Birgunj Public College, where we taught students how to use the portal. Watching their post-test scores skyrocket—with over 80% scoring above 80%—was incredibly rewarding. Even better was seeing the website’s traffic grow month after month, proving that our work was making a tangible difference.

Looking back, this project taught us the power of adaptability and community-driven design. There were setbacks—team coordination issues, scope adjustments, and technical hurdles—but each one strengthened our approach. We're grateful to YAF and our mentors for their support, and even more motivated to keep improving digital access in Nepal. This wasn’t just a project; it was proof that with the right tools and persistence, we can make governance more transparent and inclusive.
